Limits & Licenses

You can choose to fish in Minnesota and/or Canadian waters when you stay at Sunset Lodge!

During the summer, we have a great population of walleye, sauger, muskie, perch, crappie, northern pike and smallmouth bass.

Our ice fishing take consists of walleye, saugers, northern pike, eel pout, jumbo perch, tullibee, whitefish, lake trout AND crappies!

Both Ontario and MN fishing licenses can be purchased online using the links below.
We are not a licensed distribution center.

If you are fishing 3+ days, we recommend the 8 Day Sport license and Outdoor card (valid for 3 years.)
Fishing 1 or 2 days you can purchase a one-day sport license without buying an outdoor card.

In Minnesota, if you are 16 years and older, you must have a fishing license.

In Ontario, children under 18 do not need a fishing license unless they want to keep their own limit. There is no party fishing in Canada. No live bait or alcohol is allowed in Canada. When catching crappies from deeper than 30′, keep them as they have a hard time surviving release. When you have your fish, stop fishing crappies as mortality rates can be high in deep water. Also, by the letter of the law, ice is considered land when it comes to U.S. Customs. That means ice anglers not having a NEXUS must go to an OARS phone to report back into the U.S. after ice fishing in Ontario. The closest OARS phone to Sunset Lodge is located at Young's Bay. The same law applies to summer fishing, if you touch land while fishing in Canada, you are required to call back into the US at Young's Bay.

Guests who visit the NW Angle multiple times per year may be interested in the following:
  1. Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC): The RABC program facilitates the border clearance process for individuals wishing to cross the border into Canada in remote areas.
  2. NEXUS: The NEXUS program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing when entering the United States and Canada.
More information can be found here Crossing Through Canada

Anglers are responsible for reading the rules and regulations prior to fishing US and Canadian waters.
