Up at the NW Angle, we have 22 inches of ice on the Minnesota side where our houses are at and I'm finding an average of 14 inches up on Ontario where we are fishing for crappies. The lake is still nice and flat, only one crack at Bridge's Island. On the Minnesota side, we are still fishing south of Oak Island and are continuing to push south towards Garden Island which is always an ace in the hole. Shallow waters are better, we have been doing pretty good on the reefs. We are catching a lot of smaller eater sauger in the deeper water. Some bonus jumbo thrown in the mix. Shallower houses (24-28 FOW) are catching nicer eater walleyes. As is the norm up at the NW Angle, we are getting a nice mixed bag of walleye, sauger, jumbo perch, tullibee, eelpout and northern pike! On the Ontario side, our guided crappie trips have been good. This past week we had three crappies over 15 inches that are going on the wall. We are fishing crappies at 30-33 feet. Good solid, consistent bite. Give us a call to check availability, guests who stay Sun-Wed nights get 15% off of lodging! Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt

It is finally business as usual up at the NW Angle! The ice road from Young's Bay to Oak Island is open and marked with our signs to guide you over to us! Our snowmobile trails are open and marked - at the NW Angle and up from Warroad and Baudette. The Canadian ice road and snowmobile trails are open and marked to Kenora. We have about 14-16 inches of ice on snowmobile trails and where we are fishing. Due to lack of heavy snow falls and pressure ridges, there is very little slush present. We currently have about 8 inches of snow. Our roads and snowmobile trails are in great shape. The thicker ice has eliminated the need for lighter vehicles and people haulers and we are using our bombers to transport guests to our fish houses. As usual, because we are fishing the breaklines of reefs & shoals, our walleye count is much higher than saugers. If you want saugers on LOTW, go deep and off the mud, I'd recommend 30-34 feet. Our Minnesota houses are currently about 20-25 minutes away from Sunset Lodge by bomber. We are fishing breaklines off the shoals south of Oak Island. We are fishing 23-29 feet, shallower in the morning and evenings on rocks was best; gold & red jigging raps is what staff are using to get bigger fish. Fishing is still slower than this time last year but our guests are having plenty of fish fries and most groups that fish 3 days are going home with their limits. On our Canadian run and gun trips, our spots are currently about 12 miles from Sunset Lodge which takes about 30 minutes by bomber. The ice is averaging 12 inches and crappie fishing is excellent with a good midday bite which is the opposite of the way it used to be. Many years ago, it was a morning & evening bite but the past few years it is starting around 9:30am and over by the time the sun hits the trees in the evening. No need to be there early or late! We are fishing about 33 feet and are using Tungsten jigs, tipped with plastic baits, pink & white colored. We have these on hand in our tackle store. We are excited to announce that Steve & Keith Worrall will be arriving this afternoon and will be fishing both Minnesota and Ontario ice Tuesday & Wednesday with me. They are bringing the new ultra-powered Aqua-Vu Hi Def portable studio they built plus the original studio refitted with a new IR array. The hi-def unit has a Cree Infrared blaster light attached to try to break through the murky depths of Lake of the Wood's walleye infested waters. They should get some interesting video! Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt Sunset Lodge 218-223-8211 http://www.sunsetlodgeresort.com/fishing-reports Fishing started okay this week. The 12 inches of ice we now have down by Little Oak enabled us to get more of our houses down there; we are also fishing Rabbit Ears & Miller Point. We're fishing a little deeper than last week at about 24-29 feet. The dead stick wasn't as effective as the guys (and gals) that were jiggin' steady. The more they jigged, the more they caught. We had groups with limits of crappies from Canada. There is 6 inches up at Deep Water Bay but Tug Channel is full of slush. I still wouldn't recommend going up to Outer Bay. I'll have a better report next week. The lake froze pretty flat this year (which is really unusual) and sure makes for some great snowmobiling. All the snowmobile trails are now marked! The NW Angle Edge Riders recently reported having 5 inches under heavy snow on their packed trails and 7 inches on Black Trail - the Rainy River/Oak Island transit. Get out and help pack the snowmobile trails down if you can. The ice road from Young's Bay isn't plowed to us yet but we're hoping it is this week. Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt Hey everybody! Dan Schmidt from Sunset Lodge! The snowmobile trail was staked from Baudette up to the NW Angle last Wednesday, around the NW Angle today and it will be staked down to Warroad on Wednesday. Lots of snowmobiles running around up here. The trails are in great condition!! Limits of crappies are being caught up in Ontario, I don't recommend going up into Canada unless you are with a guide as there are still spots with thin ice and slush in the current areas. We checked about 30 spots from Oak Island over to Young's Bay along the snowmobile trail yesterday and found 12-14 inches. One spot around Murgen's Point was 11. We are hoping the ice road will be plowed out to us sometime this week, he's working his way over right now. We have our houses on the south of Oak Island and by Little Oak. These areas have been producing fish. We are fishing 22-28 feet in the mud, adjacent to reefs. Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt 218-223-8211 |
