Up at the NW Angle, fishing was FABULOUS this past week. This was the BEST fall I have ever seen up here! All of our guests caught their limits. The weather was beautiful - sunny and calm every day, temps in the 60's. Our water temperature is at 54 degrees. Our fish population is healthy as usual and I expect 2016 to be another great year up at the NW Angle. The biggest fish caught by our guests this summer & fall: 14.5" perch, 16" crappie, 54" muskie AND a 30" walleye. If you visit us in the winter and summer you should also consider a fall trip as it is our best fishing of the year. It's the only consistent time to fish one spot and pull in 100 fish a day. Good number and good sized fish. If you are targeting crappies - the best time of the year is the winter followed up by fall (Sep/October). Spring was tough this year and in June and July it is pretty much non-existent. I will be guiding crappie trips this winter again, my schedule is starting to fill up so if you're interested, get a hold of us soon! I can take your group up into Canada by snowmobile or by bomber. We've got our fish houses ready to go and are looking forward to an already busy winter season. We are closed now until the ice road is open around the end of December. We will be posting pictures of the ice development so stay tuned to our Facebook & Twitter pages as well as our website and various fishing blogs. Until December, good fishing! Dan Schmidt

Up at the NW Angle, fishing continued to be good this week! The emerald shiners have moved through so the walleyes are now scattered. They are not in your typical spots and you're not going to get 80 in one spot anymore, but it's still good walleye fishing! On the Minnesota side, at about the last hour of daylight get shallow - 13-14 feet. This produced limits around Oak Island. Duck hunting was good; our groups got their limits of ducks AND fish! On the Ontario side, we were fishing Johnson's Passage, even though the crappies were very spot specific, we were able to get our limits all week. Our biggest crappie was a 16 incher that will be going on the wall! Muskie Report by Forrest Huset: "We're trolling a lot of neckdown areas with current going thru them and walls that have steep breaks leading to deep water. Still 12-16 feet." Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt Up at the NW Angle, fishing has been EXCELLENT. Our water temperature was at 64 degrees at the beginning of the week and is down to 54 degrees today. We are continuing to fish our fall pattern: Deep holes near funnels going back into bays. As usual, all of our groups are catching their limits. Catching lots of walleyes, muskies, perch & crappies. Duck hunting is in full swing. Fishing is fantastic.
Forrest Huset said they are still trolling for muskies at 12-16" with big baits. Tip of the Week by Todd Sparrow: "My friend noticed he would catch a fish each time he set his rod down so he started “dead sticking” and it worked amazingly well. He would set his rod carefully to keep the jig & minnow 6”-12” off the bottom and wait for a hit. After an hour of keeping his secret to himself he told me what he was doing and we both had success by simply setting the jig just off the bottom and letting it sit. The strikes were much more aggressive doing this as compared to the conventional jigging action. Once it was hit so hard he nearly lost his rod! We looked like we were setting mouse traps as we carefully set the rod and adjusted the line depth but it worked surprisingly well! We tried this technique in other areas with success as well but it was particularly effective in the calm bay we fished that morning." If you get a chance, give that a try and let me know how it works for you! We are open until October 25th and have some availability remaining. Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt Here is our weekly fishing report: http://www.sunsetlodgeresort.com/fishing-reports Up at the NW Angle, we have the best walleye fishing of the year right now! Our water temperature has dropped to 60 degrees. The emerald shiners running. This is our fall pattern, deep holes near funnels going back into bays. All of our groups got their limits in no time at all! On the Minnesota side, the best spots were down at Northwest Point by Garden Island and Little Oak Island. On the Ontario side, Johnson's Passage in a deep hole - that whole area is loaded with fish, you just can't beat it. All you can catch! Forrest Huset said as far as muskies go - he is trolling 12-16 feet for them and having good luck! Walleyes are in the deeper holes that have current around them now. Biggest fish reported: 26" walleye with most over 20", several 22's, 23's; 15" crappie; 12" perch; 50" muskie; a 19" smallmouth bass and 3, 18 inchers! If you're fishing the mud and you come in shallower you'll catch smallmouth bass. Eagles are really grouping up for their fall migration, we saw quite a few while out fishing this week. We got to watch an eagle diving down to catch a fish - he was able to grab it before it swam away. Fun to watch! If you are able to sneak away and visit us this fall, give us a call at 218-223-8211. Until next week, good fishing! Dan Schmidt |
